Balance Tilt Shoe Replacement:
Tilt sash downward to expose tilt shoe. Remove sash from window.
Remove balance cover to expose balance rod. Disengage balance rod from tilt shoe. Remove balance rod from window unit held in by one screw.
AT TOP OF WINDOW CHANNEL, gently heat the vinyl with a hair dryer until it can be spread enough to remove the damaged tilt shoe and be replaced with the new part.
Gently re-heat the vinyl until the channel takes shape again. The vinyl has a memory and will return to its original shape.
Re-install balance rod, balance cover, engage balance rod to tilt shoe (adjust for tension). Re-install sash in window unit and test for proper operation.
How to clean your window:
Each window comes with two tilt latches (surface-mounted or recessed) on each operating sash.
Raise the bottom sash about 3 inches. Using both hands, disengage the tilt latches on both sides simultaneously. While holding the latches with your thumbs, gently pull the top of the sash towards you until the latches are clear of the frame. Holding the top of the sash, continue to lower it until you hear a "click." This "click" signifies that the balance locks have been engaged on both sides.
To tilt the top sash, lower it about 3 inches also, and follow the same procedure as above.
To return either sash to its operating position, swing the sash back up and push the top of the sash gently until the tilt latches snap back into place in the side firmly.
New Construction Window Installation
It is advisable to staple building paper over the edges of the rough opening. Put the bottom strip on first, and the sides next. The top strip is mounted after the window is installed and overlaps the top nailing flange. This will direct water away from the window opening.
Once the bottom and side strips of building paper are mounted, run a bead of caulk around the inside of the fin.
Place the window in the opening with flanges tight against the opening. Position the window 1/8" from the top, and 3/8" from the bottom, and center the window side to side. This will allow the interior trim to be installed without impeding the operation of the window.
Nail across the top first (in every other slot), making sure the window-top is level. This procedure will in effect "hand the window" and assure that is both level and plumb. Re-check the level and plumb, and nail the sides (in every other slot) from the top down.
Do not nail the flange tight. Like sliding, nailing should be just tight enough to hold the window, but not impede movement of the structure underneath during environmentally caused expansion and contraction.
Staple the top strip of building paper in place if needed.
When sliding and/or trim is installed, it should be fitted over the nailing flange using the proper caps, J-channels, or other flashing materials.
Replacement Window Installation
Note: Check your new window for correct size before removing your old window.
Tools Needed:
| Caulking Gun | Phillips Head Screw Driver |
| Hammer | Pocket Knife or Tin Snips |
| Chisel | Square |
| 3/32" Drill Bit | Electric Drill |
| Level |
Preparing The Window Opening:
Remove inside trim strips.
Cut inside sash balance cord or chain
Remove inside sash panel
Remove parting beads
Cut outside sash balance cord or chain
Remove outside sash panel
Pound the sash pulleys into the jambs so that the jambs are unobstructed for accepting the replacement window frame
Clean opening thoroughly and caulk or use insulation to fill the old holes
Installing the Replacement Window:
When installing screws, do not over tighten them as it will pull the frame out of line. Tighten screws just snug against the vinyl.
Fit the Sill Angle with its large leg up and short leg beneath the window
Temporarily hold the window in the opening to determine whether or not the top expander channel is needed. If window fits snugly, top to bottom, the top expander may be removed before installation or trimmed for a better fit
Apply a liberal caulking bead along the inside of the blind stop at the top and both sides where the window frame will make contact. Also apply caulking beneath the sill angle
Position the window into the opening. Determine if any wood shims are needed to keep the window plumb, square and centered in the opening
Raise the bottom sash up to the sash stops. Install a screw into the jamb at each side of the installation holes located under the sash stop at the bottom of the window. Make screws snug; not too tight
Lower the top sash down to the sash stops. Install a screw into the jamb at each side of the top of the window. Make screws snug; not too tight
THE WINDOW MUST BE CENTERED AND SQUARED IN THE OPENING! Check to be sure the window frame is square and adjust installation screws if necessary
Clear the center of the window for adjusting the jamb adjusters located there. Do not remove the sashes during the adjusting operation as they will help maintain proper spacing between jambs
The jamb adjusting screws are located at the middle on both sash tracks on both sides of window. Turning the screws in a clockwise direction will cause the jamb middles to "pull" toward the center of the window. This adjustment is necessary to give a close and even alignment between the sides of the sashes and the jambs, to assure proper sash operation. After making partial adjustment, close the sashes, operate them and visually judge their alignment with the jambs
Adjustments may have to be made several times until satisfactory performance is achieved. Adjustments van also be made by loosening and tightening the installation screws
In extreme cases the old wooden window opening may be badly "bowed." If the adjustments do not solve this problem, wood shims will have to be used between the rough opening and the replacement window jambs
If the top expander channel is used, caulk the rough head along the jambs inside the external blind stops. Push the head expander up into the caulking an adjust it for proper fit.
How to measure the opening to order the replacement window:
Read all of these instructions before measuring. Measure ALL WINDOWS that you intend replacing.
WIDTH
Measure between the jambs at 3 points. Measure at top, middle and bottom of window opening.
(Measure from the (W1) surface of the jambs, not from the trim strips or parting strips in your old window opening.)
Use the SMALLEST of these 3 width measurements to order the window!
HEIGHT
Measure from the (H1) High Point of the sill of your window (the surface closest to the inside of window) to the (H2) top of the window opening. Make 2 measurements. One at the left side of the window and one at the right side of the window.
Use the SMALLEST of these 2 height measurements to order the window! Take these 2 dimensions, for each window you are ordering, to your dealer. He will supply you with the correct size windows for your openings.
NOTE:
WINDOW ROUGH OPENING DEPTH DIMENSIONS NEEDED
(Ignore all pulleys and parting strips when measuring for depth dimension as they will be removed for replacement window installation)
There must be at least 3 1/4" of opening depth between the inside (D1) Window Trim and the outside (D2) Blind Stop Strip.
This much area is needed to accept the depth of the Replacement Window!
(If this much depth area is not available, the outside Blind Stop Strip will have to be removed and replaced further toward the outside of the opening)
How to Remove Your Screen:
Each screen if fitted with a rail or tabs on one side which, when pushed to the opposite side, will compress the screen springs into the deep side channel and allow the screen to be removed.
To re-install the screen, reverse the procedure above. Re-insert the spring side of the screen into the deep side channel and compress with the rail or tabs. Once compressed, the rail or tab side of the screen will move easily in line with the shallow side channel. Releasing the rail or tabs slowly will allow the screen to slip into the shallow side channel and operate correctly. Check the operation of the screen.
Adjusting Spiral-Tilt Balances:
FIELD ADJUSTMENT PROCEDURE
If for some reason your windows require adjustment, such as sash droppings, or hopping up from the sill, or if the spiral rod is disengaged, adjustment is simple:
Tilt sash downward to expose balance tilt shoe. Disengage balance rod from tilt shoe. Be careful not to allow rod to "spin off" or disconnect from tensioning tool.
If sash is dropping, add tension by rotating balance rod clockwise. Apply tension to both sides equally. Do not exceed more than two full turns at a time. Reconnect rod to tilt shoe. Re-position sash and check operations. If additional tension is required repeat process until sash holds in any position.
If sash is hopping, less tension is required. Release tension equally on both sides by allowing the tensioning tool to rotate counter-clockwise for one or two full turns. Reconnect rods to pivot shoe. Re-position sash and check operation. Repeat process if necessary.
If rod is disconnected from pivot shoe then check for position of balance rod before connecting tensioning tool and tensioning balance. Apply tension to both sides equally, not exceeding four full turns at a time.
